Surah Al Mulk is a Makki surah of the Quran. Its name is indicated in the first verse of the Quran. It’s the 67th Surah of the Quran containing 30 verses. Kids should recite this surah every night as it is the sunnah of our Holy Prophet (SalAllahu alayhi wasalam). Surah Al Mulk starts like this:
تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
…الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ
Theme of Surah Al Mulk
In this surah, Allah has warned the Quraish of the Day of Judgement. It is declared to the Quraish in this Surah that this world will end eventually on the Day of Judgement and their actions will not be taken for granted. They should prepare themselves for the consequences of their bad deeds on the day of Judgement. And they should fear the wrath of Allah as He is the one who can end their life and this world at anytime and anywhere. In short, all the teachings of Islam have been explained briefly in it.
Why it is important to recite Surah Al Mulk?
The importance of Surah Al Mulk cannot be denied and it can be seen in the following sunnah.
Sunnah of Holy Prophet
It was recited daily by our Holy Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam).
Jabir (radiAllahu anhu) said it was the custom of the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) not to go to sleep until he had read Tabarakallahi Biyadihil Mulk and Alif Laam Meem Tanzeel<span class="su-quote-cite">Sahihul Jamiea</span>
Entrance into paradise
The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said,
There is a surah in the Qur’an which is only thirty verses. It defends whoever recited it, until it puts him into paradise<span class="su-quote-cite">Sahihul Jamiea</span>
Favourite surah of Holy Prophet
Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (radiAllahu anhu) expressed that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said,
It is my desire that Surahtul Mulk should be in the heart of every Muslim<span class="su-quote-cite">Hakim</span>
Torments of the grave
The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said;
Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torments of the grave<span class="su-quote-cite">Sahihul Jamiea</span>
