Ramadan رمضان and Quran القرآن

Ramadan is the 9th month of the islamic calendar. This is one of those special months where ALLAH’s special blessings come to muslims day and night. This is the month when Quran was revealed. This is the month which has a night which is better than thousand months.  This is the month when muslims fast, pray, be kind to others and share what they have with others. It is important that a muslim refrain from any sin during this month. In arabic the word ‘Fasting’ is called as ‘الصِّيَامُ’ which comes at many places in Quran. Here are presenting few Surahs where the word ‘الصِّيَامُ’ came or the word رَمَضَانَ

Ramadan and Quran

 (Al-baqarah 185)

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).
So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days.
Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you.
(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar; Allah is the Most Great) on seeing the crescent of the months of Ramadan and Shawwal] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.

Purpose of Ramadan

(Al-baqarah 183)

O Believers, the Fast has been made obligatory on you just as it was prescribed for the followers of the Prophets before you.
It is expected that this will produce piety in you.

Duration of the Fast

(Al-Baqarah 187)

You are also pemitted to eat and drink during the nights of the Fast months until you can discern the white streak of dawn from the blackness of night.
Then (abstain from all these things and) complete your fast till night-fall.

Night of Power

(Al-Qadr)

Behold, We revealed this (Qur’an) on the Night of Power.
And what do you know what the Night of Power is?
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
The angels along with the Spirit descend in it by the permission of their Lord with all kinds of decrees.  All peace is that night until the rise of dawn.

Yes, the Quran acknowledges certain exemptions from fasting for individuals who are ill or on a journey.
